UP FIRST:

We Can’t Ignore the Spooky Candy in the Room.

This Halloween season came like a ghost in the night and left with something more frightening than a jump scare.

No, I’m not talking about the amount of people that dressed up as Barbie or Ken this year…

The most shocking part of Halloween was the amount of money spent on candy.

This year, it is estimated that 3.6 billion dollars were spent on Halloween candy in the United States. Yes, billion with a “b”. Could the reason be that your neighbors finally got a clue and bought the full-size candy bars? Or, it could be that people bought enough candy to last a while because, ya know, it’s the end times. Joking.

Regardless of the reason, I know that there is probably a bag of candy haunting you from the bottom of a pantry somewhere. According to Google Trends, people didn’t just buy the candy they wanted, but they also wanted to know how it breaks down nutritionally.

Just for kicks, here are some of the most searched terms on Google regarding “nutrition” for this week.

What are some nutritional takeaways from this year’s spooky season:

1- I would argue that for YOU, if you want to partake in an occasional Twix (or Sonic Corndog apparently), the question is not “this is bad for me, should I eat it?”

The real thing you should figure out is >

2- If I eat this candy, how can I put it to work? Don’t let those Nerds hit the system and stay a while. Give them a job!

How?

3- Put that sugar to work by cutting some carbs later in the day or by burning them off! A walk, run, or workout with this in mind can’t hurt.

So, join your fellow trick-or-treaters and enjoy the occasional sweet treat. But, you can do it in a way that does not set you back in your health and fitness goals!

Eat Breakfast, Be a Champion

Looking for some great breakfast options to work in to your week?

Here are some Lower Carb, High Protein Breakfast Ideas that you can use! This is a great starting point for a daily rhythm (especially if you’re burning some leftover candy).

Ingredients for Breakfast Success: Go-to items to fuel your day.

  • Eggs (my favorite). Whether you eat one egg or you eat 5, these will always be a great source of good fats and protein. They even work as a standalone meal!

    • Add some Tony’s seasoning if you like a little flare!

  • Greek Yogurt- Mix up some delicious protein, carbs, and fats to start the day! You can’t go wrong with some good yogurt with prebiotics.

  •  Nuts and Seeds- Also containing a valuable amount of healthy fats, these are great if you are on the run! Shoot for almonds, walnuts, pepitas, or sunflower seeds. Throw them in the Greek yogurt!

  • Chicken Sausage- Headed to the office and need something to warm up real quick? Grab some chicken sausage, throw it in an English muffin with some cheese or eggs and BOOM, you have a protein-packed meal on the road.

    • Side Note- You can make these in bulk, freeze them, and pull them out of the freezer as needed!

In Other News:

Speaking of a high protein breakfast, this dude goes all out and shows Twitter how it’s done by chugging an entire glass of egg whites.

You can’t hit your protein goal faster than this. But, there’s no guarantee that you won’t have trouble keeping it down.

Pumpkin and Spice and Calories that are Nice…it rhymes.

PSL lover? The Macro Barista is back and gives you options for coffee that not only tastes good, but fits within your nutrition goals as well. Check out his post below!

Not only is the PSL here, but the Christmas line of products came out at Starbucks this week! I walked into a Starbucks today to finish writing this newsletter and thought “Lets gooooooo, I’m gonna get the Peppermint Mocha, sit down, and crank out this newsletter like a boss.”

Then, I looked at the nutrition facts.

This Christmas STAPLE is disguised as a holiday happy but is really just minty mayhem.

But, I cannot ring in the New Year without finding a healthier alternative to this delicious drink.

*personal rant over*

(If you have a connection to the Macro Barista, let me know. I need his help).
