Food Triage: What should you eat first?

Did you know that when it comes to food, HOW you eat matters just as much as WHAT you eat? Things like the speed at which you eat, your mindset, emotions, and what you eat first matter!

Here is a practical way you can improve how you eat.

Food Triage- Protein First.

When you sit down at the table after a LONG day at work, the last thing you probably think about is the order in which you eat your food.

I would suggest that no matter what is on your plate, eat the protein first!

Why?

  1. Your body needs protein and will eat until it receives the appropriate amount. For you smart people out there (all of you), this is called the protein leverage hypothesis. No wonder snacks like Cheez-Its and Pringles don’t make you feel full!

  2. You will feel more full- FASTER! Eating protein first helps your stomach and brain say “I’m full” at a more appropriate time, keeping you from overeating.

  3. You should aim to eat approximately 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. Putting protein first ensures that your body is getting the nutrients it needs to rebuild and restore what you use throughout the day.

Next time you eat a meal, give this a try and see if it makes a difference in how fast you feel full!

You’re killing it, by the way.

antibiotics!?!

Trending Topic #1- News from the chicken shack (Chick-fil-A).

Chick-fil-A has recently announced that they are changing their antibiotic standards for their chicken. They are moving from a “antibiotics ever” policy to “some antibiotics, but none that could be used or affect humans”.

Should you ditch the holy chicken for an alternative source? Probably not, though there will be slightly more antibiotics in CFA chicken, they are still one of the few quick-service chains that uses real chicken with no fillers or added hormones.

In my book, Chick-fil-A is still worth waiting in the drive-thru line for.

Trending Topic #2- Munch Madness

This month and next are some of the MOST exciting in college basketball! It also means that the snack table will be overflowing during watch parties.

Here are three helpful tips to help you stay on track as you watch your bracket beats all of your friends’.

  1. Follow the advice above and go protein first. Before you reach for the cookies, hit up the wings! You’ll feel more full and feel much better later.

  2. It’s not just the food, but the drinks that can sneak up! Make sure you work in a healthy amount of water in between the occasional soda, tea, or other bevvys.

  3. Take a walk! Whether its a commercial break or rising tempers (the refs do struggle sometimes), it’s a perfect reason to take a walk. Put some of those calories to work and fight blood sugar spikes with a good, 10-minute walk here and there.

That’s it for today!
